Please pay special attention to his line drawings at
the end. When I moved to Cape Girardeau twelve years ago, I fell in love with
them. The sensuality, fluidity, and attention to the female movement was
astounding to me.
Dr. Chapman's Statements
"My mother told me to do something worthwhile with my
life other than being an artist. So I became a medical doctor. Throughout my
education, art enhanced my experiences, undergraduate courses in the history of
art at Southeast Missouri State University and Masters in Anatomy at the
University of Missouri. A course in pathology gave me the opportunity to use
watercolor and ink to record the images seen on the microscopic slides of
tumors. In the United States Air Force as a physician, I had the opportunity to
attend night classes in ceramics for two years at San Rafael Junior College.
When I retired from medicine in 1997, Dr. Edwin Smith, art professor at
Southeast Missouri State University, invited me to work with his sculpture art
classes. I had the most fun I've ever had in my life."
"I had a wonderful life experience practicing
medicine, uplifted equally by a warm relationship with patients and the
experience of art."
Dr. Chapman recently passed away. He will be sorely
missed by many!
